Love it or hate it, there’s no avoiding this cold time of the year.  While some of us embrace the winter season and the festivities it brings, others dread six months of dark mornings and dank weather.

If you’re an avid Instagrammer, Pinner or an interior design lover it’s more than likely that you’ve recently noticed the word ‘Hygge’ and phrases like ‘How to Hygge’ or ‘Bring Hygge into your Home’.  This current, fashionable buzz-word derives from a Danish phrase (pronounced Hooga) that doesn’t translate directly into English but means creating a warm and cosy atmosphere through well-being and mindfulness, socialising, comfort food and simply taking time out to enjoy and appreciate the good things in life.

Anything that makes these cold and dark months more bearable sounds good to us so we’ve pulled together ten ways to bring Hygge into your life this winter, the ethical, vegan and cruelty free way.  If it works for the happiest nation in the world we’re willing to try it out!

1. Set the Lighting
Getting your lighting right will instantly create a warm and cosy atmosphere.  Lamps with a low wattage bulb, a string of fairy lights and a few candles will bring a comforting, natural and warm glow to the room.

2. Create a Snug
Transform a corner of a room into a snug where you can put your feet up and get cosy under a blanket while the rain lashes down and the wind blows a gale outside.  Adding a fur rug, cushions and throws will create extra texture, warmth and comfort… just make sure it’s faux!

3. Make a Reading List
Cold and dark evenings mean spending more time inside.  Curling up in your snug and settling down with a good book you’ve been meaning to read is the ultimate relaxing Hygge past time.

4. Indulge in Some Sugary Treats
Danes are famous for their pastries. Hygge is all about enjoying the little things in life so get baking and don’t feel guilty about enjoying a sweet treat. After all, we need the energy boost during the cold snap! Try your hand at making these vegan Cherry Jam Danishes by Oh, Ladycakes.

5. Eat Slow Comfort Food with Friends and Family
Taking time to prepare, make and enjoy your food is a large part of Hygge living. Invite friends and family round for a cosy afternoon that leads into a relaxing evening of hearty and nourishing food. Spicy soups and casseroles make the perfect vegan Hygge food.

6. Drink Coffee and Warming Drinks
Hot drinks are essential for keeping warm and cosy during winter. The Danes often keep a big steaming thermos of water on the table to top up their coffee. Hot chocolates with whipped cream, hot toddies and mulled wine also make for the most comforting winter drinks.

7. Get Outside and Connect with Nature
Hygge isn’t all about staying in. Embrace the elements of winter by wrapping up warm and stepping out into the cold. It will make returning to your cosy home even better. Appreciate the colours of frosty woodland and blow your worries away with a leisurely stroll on a wintery beach.

8.  Bring the Outside in
Give your home a natural and rustic touch by bringing in long, willowy branches, berries and blooms. This will remind you of the beauty that winter brings to nature.

9. Transform your Bathroom into a Tranquil Spa
Hygge is all about looking after your well being.  Take time for yourself, run a hot bath, light some candles and sink into those bubbles for the ultimate pamper session.
